BLUEBIRD WARE Settlers moved into southeastern Ohio during the early 1800s. They settled in the area to farm and manufacture pottery due to the abundant supply of natural resources, such as land, clay and fuel.
During the harsh Ohio winters, farming and pottery manufacturing ceased. When spring came, which was about the same time bluebirds returned to the area, settlers reopened their potteries. Collectively, these small potteries became known as “bluebird potteries,” and much of what they produced was known as “bluebird ware.” Burley Clay Products has chosen to continue marking our crocks with the bluebird symbol to reflect our heritage.
